Do you ever find your life spinning out of control, then longing for a quiet retreat in the mountains perhaps, or a lovely ocean paradise? In these tumultuous times. we all need to find moments of respite. In this workshop, we will explore a simple yet profound practice of pausing between our thoughts and actions, opening ourselves up to enjoying the subtle beauty that exists all around us.

The play of light on a wall, perhaps, or the vivid orange of a tulip illuminated by the morning light. A quiet moment in time captured with our camera. In the first part of this workshop, we explore the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Stephen Shore, Elliot Erwin, Agnes Martin and many others as examples of what it means to see in stillness. In the second part of the workshop, we practice taking photos of our immediate surroundings using the techniques discussed in the previous section. Lastly, we discuss our experiences and photos as a class. Hearing from each other is key to fine-tuning our own practice of seeing and experiencing beauty in the moment, a practice of learning how to reside in the eye of the hurricane. This is a life long practice. We start wherever we are at, with no judgement of ourselves or others. No special photography equipment or photography experience is required. You can use the camera on your phone or any other camera that you have.

Nazli Nomanbhoy is a life long photographer and educator. Her photographs have been displayed in galleries and art shows, and she has received national recognition for her work
