Always wanted to write a children's book but not sure where to start? Worried about markets "moving on" from that idea you've always wanted to write? In this course we'll be examining writing for younger audiences, making your novel appealing, and the steps necessary to get published, whether through big publishing houses or self-publishing. Take your novel idea and spin it into a compelling modern narrative that will have your children and their friends talking! Two separate sessions allow a focus on young adult (YA) fiction or children’s picture books. We’ll explore categories within children's or teen fiction, what makes a compelling story and more. We’ll work on character creation, theme, and plotting. In the YA session, we’ll discover why tropes are prevalent in teen writing. Students are highly encouraged to become familiar with recent examples of children's or teen books so that we can discuss the elements as well as what works and why. You'll have opportunities to work on your writing and get feedback. Raymond Cober graduated from the Denver Publishing Institute; an accredited graduate-level certificate offered by the University of Denver. He's also read thousands of children's and teen books, from the very first published to the latest best-sellers, and has led many writing groups centered around writing for children and teens. He is a member of the Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and is currently working on his third novel.
