Everyone has poetic thoughts-we just don't always write them down. Poetry has a unique capacity to express observation, emotion, and meaning. In a time of AI, poetry is a vital avenue for connecting with our humanity. In this course we will demystify poetry. How do you start? How do you talk about poetry? What do you do with a first draft? Weekly prompts will get you going so you can come to class with your own poems to workshop. This class is entirely discussion-centered. We'll spend the first half of each session talking about how to workshop and methods of revision. We'll spend the second half putting that discussion into practice by workshopping student poems. Students will leave this five-week course with a chapbook of poems and a framework for talking about poetry the way professional poets do.
